Azabu Hikawa Shrine
During the Heian period, from the end of the 8th century to the end of the 12th century, Japan’s politics were centered around Kyoto aristocrats known as kuge.
On the other hand, this was also a time when groups called “samurai,” who were rooted in the provinces and armed to maintain public order, gradually gained power.

In the 5th year of Tenkei (942), in the Kanto region, far from Kyoto, a major rebellion known as the Taira no Masakado Rebellion broke out, led by a military commander named Taira no Masakado, a member of the Taira clan, a descendant of Emperor Kanmu and leader of the samurai group rooted in the Kanto region.
Azabu Hikawa Shrine is said to have been founded by Minamoto no Tsunemoto, one of the deputy commanders of the punitive force sent from Kyoto to pacify the rebellion.
Minamoto no Tsunemoto was a descendant of Emperor Seiwa’s grandson, and his descendants would go on to shape Japanese history as the leaders of the samurai clan known as the “Minamoto clan” and rivals to the Taira clan.

The gods enshrined at Azabu Hikawa Shrine are Susanoo-no-Mikoto, who is said to have defeated Yamata-no-Orochi (an eight-headed snake monster) in the province of Izumo (present-day Shimane Prefecture), and Yamato Takeru, the second son of Emperor Keiko and the legendary hero who is said to have pacified Kyushu and Kanto.

麻布氷川神社
平安時代と呼ばれた8世紀末～12世紀末、我が国の政治は、公家と呼ばれる京都の貴族中心に行われていました。
一方、その時代は地方に根を張り、治安維持のために武装した「武士」と呼ばれる集団が次第に力をつけてくる時代でもありました。

天慶5年（942年）、京都から遠く離れた関東で、桓武天皇の末裔、関東に根を張る武士団の棟梁である平家一門の一人、平将門という武将による大きな反乱「平将門の乱」がありました。
その際、平定のために京都から派遣された追討軍副将の一人であった、源経基が創建したと伝わるのが麻布氷川神社です。
源経基は清和天皇の孫に当たる血筋で、その子孫は「源氏」と呼ばれる武士の棟梁、平家のライバルとして、日本の歴史を動かすことになります。

麻布氷川神社に祀られている神様は、出雲の国(現在の島根県)でヤマタノオロチ(八本首の蛇の怪物)を退治したと伝わる素戔鳴尊と、景行天皇の第二皇子で、九州や関東を平定したと伝わる伝説的英雄、日本武尊です。
