Shirokane Hikawa Shrine (said to have been founded in the Asuka period)
The period from the end of the 6th century to 710 is known in Japan as the Asuka period, and it is believed that governance was centered around the Asuka region of present-day Nara Prefecture.
During this period, the country was able to establish a system for domestic and foreign affairs by utilizing Chinese characters that had already been introduced from China, such as controlling bureaucrats through the Twelve Ranks of Caps, establishing laws such as a 17-article constitution and a 17-volume ritsuryo code (the Taiho Code), publicly spreading Buddhism through correspondence with the continent, and sending envoys (envoys to the Sui Dynasty) to China.Chinese characters that had already been introduced from China were used to establish a system for domestic and foreign affairs, and culture also flourished.
Even after the introduction of Buddhism, Japan did not prohibit worship of ancient Japanese gods (Shinto), and the coexistence of Buddhism and Shinto, in other words, freedom of religion, has continued to the present day.
Shirokane Hikawa Shrine is a Shinto shrine that is said to have been founded as the guardian deity of Shirokane village during the Hakuho period (645-710), when construction of magnificent Buddhist temples was underway in the Kinki region, where the capital was located at the time.
The three deities enshrined here are Susanoo-no-Mikoto, who is said to have defeated Yamata-no-Orochi (an eight-headed snake monster) in Izumo Province (present-day Shimane Prefecture), Kushinadahime, who was saved by him and became his wife, and Okuninushi-no-Mikoto, who saved a white rabbit in the area and became Susanoo-no-Mikoto’s son-in-law.
